Are you ready to talk to your crush?

I really want to become a writer someday. That's probably one of the reasons why I started this blog. I want to practice writing as much as I can while I'm still young. Papa always says "Practice makes perfect." Next year, I want to look back and see if I've improved as a writer or..... BECOME WORSE!

Anyway, I really envy this kid who, at the same age as me, already has a book that he had written sold in bookstores in America. Alec Greven, a 4th Grade student (also like me!) from Castle Rock, Colorado, began writing his book when he was 8 years old. Well, what started out as just a school assignment led to his book being sold at his school's book fair. Somehow, a bigshot publisher discovered his book and made a deal to help him get his book read by kids (and adults too) all across the country. He's even guesting on tv to help promote the book. Wow!!!

Doesn't look any extra special does he? Just like any other ordinary kid you would probably see in the playground or even at the arcade. But what was really surprising was the topic of his book. I thought a kid like him would choose to write about toys, friends, family or school. But no. He chose to write about...GIRLS!!!

When Alec was asked what inspired to write the book, he said, "I saw boys around the playground having trouble getting girls — just not knowing what to say. I wanted to write a book that could help them." American kids sure start early don't they? In the meantime, here are some of Alec's tips on getting the girl of your dreams:

*A crush is like a love disease. It can drive you mad.
*Girls don't like sloppy boys. Ditch the sweat pants and comb your hair if you want to
get a girlfriend.

*When meeting a girl, walk up to her casually. Say, "Hi." If she says "Hi" back, you're off
to a good start.

*Most girls don't like showoffs.
*When talking to a girl, act calm and don't be nervous.
*If you do win victory with a girl, don't cheer in front of her. Go somewhere private,
then knock your head off and cheer.

*Pretty girls are like cars that need a lot of oil.
*Pretty girls are more likely to dump a boy than regular girls.
*Girls don't like the class clown. They tend to like the smartest kid in the class.
That might be a good thing to shoot for, because then you pretty much get all the girls.

*The rudest thing a boy can do to a girl is to say or do something mean.
*It's hard to hold on to girls for a long time. Some boys might get the girl to like them
at the start of a recess and at the end, the girl dumps them.

*Life is hard. Move on. You have to get over it. Otherwise, everything just crashes down.
You're all depressed. You don't play. You spend your time locked up in your room.
You have to move on.

*Listen to your mom. She's a girl too.

Now that's some list. I don't know if it will work but I guess you won't know unless you try. By the way, when Alec was asked what he plans to write next, he said he'll continue with the same topic but his next subjects will be middle schoolers and then high schoolers. Who knows, he might also write one for shy adults too!

Why is a kid like me writing a blog?

Hi! Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is John, 9 years old and a Grade 4 student in a private school somewhere in Quezon City. Here I am after school and getting ready to play outside with my friends.

John

Like many boys my age, I am sucker for video games especially the Pokemon games on my Gameboy Advance. I also love to draw cartoon superheroes whom I just imagined. My mama says if I practice drawing everyday, I can become as good as those who draw the cartoons on tv. Papa also said they make a lot of money and are able to travel to many countries. It sounds like a lot of fun don't you think?

Now, back to my question. Why is a kid like me writing a blog? Well, my parents always tells me that there are many ways that I can express myself. Drawing is one. And writing this blog is another. Here I can tell you the things that I may be too shy to say aloud to my family or my classmates. I just hope you won't laugh if I make mistakes with my spelling and grammar. I hear my papa always saying this about himself and I think its how I want to describe myself too. "I'm still a work in progress." So be patient with me OK?

Anyway, I just want to show you pictures of my brothers and sister so you'll know my family somehow through this blog. Let's start with my twin brother Joseph.

Joseph

OK, I know what you're going to say. That Joseph is more handsome than me. Weeehhhh!!! That's not what a lot of my friends say. They said that they like my face much better. Anyway, it's up to you. He's my twin brother and we fight a lot (often about silly things, hehehehe) but I love him very much.

Now let's go to my other brother Julian.

Julian

Here we go again! And I guess I have no choice but to agree with you. Julian is really the cutest among the three of us. But please, don't tell him that I said this because I'll deny it. What? You really believed that I would just give up my "throne"? NEVER!! Joke! =)

OK, let's move on to my one and only sister Kiana.

Kiana

Will you be shocked if I told you that we almost lost Kiana last year? It's true! What happened was Kiana was hit by a speeding van while she was crossing the street. This happened right in front of our house. We were all crying and praying to Jesus to save her. And believe it or not, she survived that accident with no broken bones or deep scars but only superficial wounds. The doctor told my Papa that her small scars will heal by itself and go away in time since she's still very young. Isn't that a miracle? Praise God!!!

Hey, I didn't realize that this is so tiring. I wanted to show you pictures of my parents and my school too but I guess that will be for next time. But I'll leave you with one last picture taken last year when we stayed overnight in this hotel.

Hotel

That was one of my best memories from last year. Anyway, please come visit again soon because I'll tell you other stories from my life.

GOD BLESS US!!!
